A Small Home with a Big Heart
by Lynn Priemer

"Warm Hands, Warm Heart," an affordable- ticket fundraiser ($20 per person with food and a drink ticket) was at the Market Garden Brewery on January 27th benefitting Joseph's Home, a transitional housing ministry of the Sisters of Charity of St Augustine.

Attendees heard "heartwarming" success stories of previously homeless men turning their lives around, empowered and supported by the mission of Joseph's Home. They heard about Bernard who had never painted before but was now selling his paintings from a gallery and Wendell enjoying his new apartment and classes at Tri-C.

The Sisters of Charity realized the unmet needs of homeless men being released from area hospitals with nowhere to go and no resources and decided to do something about it. An unused convent at 2412 Community College Blvd. was converted to Joseph's Home. The men arrive after being released from the hospital and stay from three months to two years, kept busy with whatever they need to lead a productive life, a GED, job training, addiction counseling, medical care and even hobby development. As at any good home the key ingredients are love and discipline.

More than 400 men have passed through the doors and re-entered the world since the beginning in 2000. There is room for eleven men at one time. When ready to leave, the men are helped to find appropriate housing, and given starter kits of bedding, housewares and some furniture if needed. More importantly, they leave with life and work skills, better health and a new found feeling of self-worth.

If you are looking for a great charity to support with donations (of course), men's clothing and toiletries, household items, or personal time think of Joseph's Home
