Fusion Struck Down by Comets, 21-13

Cleveland Fusion
It was largely an exercise in futility-for both teams in the Saturday night NWFA game at the Dublin Coffman Shamrocks Stadium in Columbus. The Cleveland Fusion had traveled south to meet the Columbus Comets in the third game of the season for each team.

Going in, the Fusion led their division with a 2-0 record, coming home it was to find three teams at 2-1, (Cleveland, Columbus and Pittsburgh) while Erie is at 1-2.

Each team scored, yet missed other opportunities, while also being hindered by penalties. Illegal motion, face-mask and personal fouls were called on both sides. In the end, Columbus was more aggressive, and came away with the victory 21-13 in an exciting game that saw three of the five touchdowns scored in the last minute of play in three of the four quarters.

Fusion quarterback Casey Stinson again demonstrated her versatility by completing 18 passes in 37 attempts for 184 yards, while rushing 25 yards, and scoring one TD. Comets QB Crystal Davis engineered more of a rushing game, while completing 3 of 8 attempts for 52 yards.

Each QB was sacked once, although Stinson was intercepted once, with 15 seconds left in the game. Also, at one point, Stinson recovered her own fumble, retaining possession for her team.

WR Shannon Anderson scored Cleveland's other touchdown on an 8 yard reception with 19 seconds left in the first half. Anderson had 6 receptions for 72 yards on the game. TE Shauna Nevel was 10 for 106 yards, while FB Lisa Heinl caught two passes for six yards. Jennifer Sheldon was 1 for 2 on extra points. RB Martina Latessa was the leading rusher for the Fusion with 39 yards on 12 carries.

For the Comets, Lindsay Eckles had 3 receptions for 52 yards and one TD. She also does all the kicking for her team, including all 3 extra points. Their leading rusher, Shelly Gates, scored two TDs, while carrying 31 times for 179 yards.

For the defense, the Fusion's Stefanie Russo let with 12 tackles, 4 of the solo, and Stephanie Balochko was right behind her with ten assists. Carla Lindsay and Elizabeth Wozniak were each credited with 2 solos and 6 assists.

For Columbus, the leaders were Jennifer Hutchinson with 7 solo tackles and 8 assists, one interception and the sack. Ivy Ortman collected seven solos and 3 assists.

All the northern teams have a bye this weekend for Mother's Day. Cleveland resumes play on May 20, in a game against the Milwaukee Momentum at Bedford's Bearcat Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:05.
