I grew up in a family of readers. My Mom read her historical fiction; my Dad read westerns. My oldest sister read everything she could get her hands on. I would read whatever I could get when the county bookmobile came to my school and what I could find around the house.
Payday for our family meant a trip to the local drugstore where they had racks of paperbacks, magazines and comic books (Richie Rich and Uncle Scrooge were my preferred reads) all waiting to come home with us. Books were read and reread and passed down from older to youngest (me).
My first favorites were the Nancy Drew mysteries. I can still remember those intriguing covers with Nancy slipping into secret passages or clock towers, inviting me to open the cover and follow along. I've been following Nancy and her fellow sleuths ever since: Hercules Poirot, Mrs. Pollifax, Travis McGee, Anna Pigeon, Leaphorn and Chee, Kinsey Milhone, Stephanie Plum, and the list goes on.
Imagine a life where you get to spend your days with all these wonderful characters and more. In a way, that's exactly what I do. I'm a librarian.
For me, reading is like eating. It's an urge that can never be fully satiated. I can fill the need for a short time, but the hunger always continues. There's always another book to be read, another character to get to know, another adventure awaiting me. Shiny covers beckon me to open them and devour what's inside.
As a librarian, I learned that a large part of the joy of reading was in sharing that book experience with other readers. Talking about the characters like they are old friends, comparing our experiences with the story, expressing our delight and sometimes our disgust. And the anticipation of doing the same thing again when the next book comes out.
That's why I am so excited that I've been asked to start this online book club.
I'd like to invite you to read along with me. I've picked out a few books for us to share that I hope will be fun, entertaining, thought provoking, and will inspire some great conversations. We'll read a book and then come together online (maybe in person in the future) to share our impressions about what we've read.
This is new for us so your suggestions are more than welcome.
